Piazza Santo Stefano

Illuminating a Historic Square in the Heart of Bologna

Piazza Santo Stefano, often known as Seven Churches Square, is one of Bologna’s most distinctive public spaces and a key part of the city’s historic identity. Surrounded by long porticoes and historic palazzi, the square reflects the architectural character that defines Bologna’s medieval urban fabric.

This civic space forms the entrance to the Basilica of Santo Stefano complex, a group of historic religious buildings that have shaped the cultural life of the city for centuries. The surrounding architecture and layered materials create a rich visual environment that benefits from carefully considered illumination.

Revealing Architectural Detail with Warm White Light

For this project, Lumascape Quadralux Q6 and Quadralux Q8 luminaires were used to illuminate the square and its surrounding façades with warm white light.

The lighting reveals the material richness of the architecture, highlighting marble veining, sculpted capitals, brick textures, and decorative façade elements. By carefully washing the surfaces with controlled light, the system enhances the visual depth of the historic buildings while preserving the atmosphere of the square.

Lighting That Supports Heritage Architecture

The lighting design, developed by I-DEA, focuses on enhancing the architectural features of the square while respecting its historical character. The result is a balanced night-time environment where the architecture remains the focal point and the lighting remains discreet.

With the support of Arkilux, Lumascape luminaires help bring clarity and definition to this important public space, allowing residents and visitors to experience the square in a new way after sunset.
