The Captain Cook Memorial Jet is one of Canberra’s most visible and powerful features. Installed in Lake Burley Griffin to commemorate the bicentenary of Captain James Cook’s discovery of the east coast of Australia, the jet rises to a height of 152 metres (approx. 500 feet) and pumps approximately six tonnes of water into the air at any given moment.
Now, thanks to Lumascape Kololux K8 luminaires, this hydraulic monument has become a beacon of color and motion—transforming the city’s night skyline with vivid light and fluid motion.
At the base of the spout, 12 Kololux K8 RGBW luminaires are installed just above the waterline, positioned to light through the vertical plume. While not submerged, the fixtures operate with six tonnes of water constantly above them, making IP68 protection essential for long-term reliability and safety.
Each luminaire features 160 W optics with 10° and 15° beam angles, delivering concentrated beams of light that punch through the full height of the jet. The result is a striking vertical column of color that can be seen from miles away.
The RGBW output of the Kololux K8 system enables smooth transitions between vibrant color scenes, allowing operators to light the jet in custom hues for diplomatic welcomes, national holidays, city festivals, and other civic occasions. The flowing water becomes a living light sculpture, with color appearing to rise through the plume in dynamic, kinetic waves.
The Captain Cook Memorial Jet demonstrates the capabilities of Lumascape’s Kololux range—engineered for architectural and landmark features where performance, durability, and visual impact must go hand in hand. With RGBW precision and robust IP68 protection, Kololux K8 luminaires deliver reliable, high-output results even in the most demanding conditions.
