Illuminating Taking Stock at Denver's National Western Center
Located at Denver's National Western Center, Taking Stock by Cliff Garten Studio reinterprets the heritage of the American West through a contemporary bronze sculpture that expresses movement, strength, and connection.
As part of the National Western Center's ongoing transformation into a year-round destination for culture, education, and community, the sculpture serves as a welcoming landmark that can be experienced both day and night. To ensure the artwork maintains its visual presence after sunset, Lumascape provided a discreet architectural lighting solution that enhances the sculpture without competing with it.
Precision Lighting That Reveals Form and Texture
The installation features Lumascape Erden EB2 inground luminaires in 3000K, using a combination of vertical and 15° angled optics to illuminate the sculpture from multiple directions.
This carefully balanced approach reveals the bronze surface, emphasizing its texture, depth, and sculptural form while maintaining natural shadow and contrast. The lighting highlights the artist's intent without drawing attention to the luminaires themselves, allowing the artwork to remain the visual focus.
Installed below grade, the Erden EB2 fixtures integrate seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, providing a clean appearance during the day while delivering precise sculpture lighting after dark.
Extending the Experience Beyond Daylight
Public art lighting plays an important role in creating memorable civic spaces, and thoughtful sculpture lighting ensures those spaces remain active and engaging long after sunset. By carefully revealing form, texture, and material, architectural lighting allows artworks to be experienced well beyond daylight hours.
At Taking Stock, the combination of Erden EB2 inground luminaires and precise optical control extends the visitor experience into the evening, allowing residents and visitors to appreciate the sculpture from a new perspective while contributing to the atmosphere of the National Western Center.
